Learning to Care -Fenris

Post  Fenris on Thu Mar 10, 2011 9:00 am

Learning to Care

I stood in the small kitchen of our house in the deep forests of Saint John. My face was flushed from yelling at my mother, who had taken away my computer. She always complained that I was on too much, which I disagreed, I made myself go outside at least once a week.
We had been passing the argument back and forth for almost an hour now; neither of us seemed close to giving in. I had to clench my fist to keep from physically striking something. My brother, John, was sitting in the corner, watching. He was a quiet, docile kid, always avoiding conflict. I on the other hand had a temper, and I used it.
“You would never do this to John!” I yelled, gesturing to John standing in the corner. I clenched my fist so tightly; my knuckles turned white and began to go numb. My angry gaze settled on John for a moment, and then I looked back at my mother.
“That’s because he has a life outside of the computer.” My mother fumed, stomping her foot. She was calm and collected most of the time, but I definitely got my temper from her. “You should try it,” she added, clearly mocking me.
I had enough at that point, and turned on my heel and walked out the door. As I got farther away from the house, I vaguely heard my mother telling my not to come back, but I blocked it out. I just wanted to be alone, to cool off and collect my thoughts. I made it only a little farther before my brother ran up and grabbed my arm, trying to drag me back. I then yanked my arm away, telling him to get lost, glaring at him through narrow eyes. He mumbled something I didn’t hear then ran back to the house. I resumed walking away, seeming with anger. I edged the small clearing setting our house out of the woods, and looked back. I shook my head and entered the shadows of the forest. I planned to take an old shortcut I used as a kid to my friends place, but I hadn’t used it in a while. I hope I remembered my way.
I thought I would have arrived at my destination after an hour of trudging through the forest. I stopped to take a look at my surroundings, finally releasing my clenched fists. All I could see was the endless Canadian forest surrounding me. The harsh winter had started to release its grip on the landscape; the deep snow had thawed, leaving the ground wet and muddy. The damp forest seemed to lay a dreary mist over the ground, shrouding any familiar rocks or tree stumps. I kept turning around, hoping to catch a glimpse of something familiar. A panic settled over me, franticly I scanned the forest, straining my eyes. I started to sprint in the direction I felt I had come, no sound except my labored breathing and the thud of my feet hitting the ground. I ran until I realized I was going in the wrong direction. I came to a small clearing, littered with leaves. I staggered out of the forest, rasping for breath.
I saw what looked like a tree stump on the other end of the clearing, and headed over, glad to rest. As I drew near, I noticed a rhythmic up and down movement coming from the stump. I noticed the stump was actually a brown and tawny colored wolf, half hidden amongst the leaves. The wolf was large, and I started to back away, then I realized it was injured. It appeared to have a broken leg and something wrong with its neck. I stopped, watching as it struggled to growl, but it slowly evolved into a pitiful whine. I laughed, as its sorry attempt at scaring me had failed. A sinister smiled crept onto my lips. I started to throw stones and kick the wolf, laughing each time a yelp escaped its jaws. After a while of the wolf yelping, it started to whimper, a long continuous noise. After I felt satisfied, I turned to walk away. I had accomplished my goal, of calming myself.
I got to the edge of the forest when another wolf appeared in front of me. I froze, waiting for it to attack. Instead it ran past me to the injured wolf. I turned to watch from a distance, the two wolves exchanged glances and the steady movement from the injured wolf ceased, as did the whimpering. The black wolf nuzzled the now dead wolf, and tilted its head to the sky and howled. The wolf howled for a long time, a long and mournful howl, even as a human I seemed to understand it, it was a message of grief for its lost loved one. I suddenly felt a wave of sorrow engulf me. I immediately started to regret what I had done. I forced myself to turn away, to ignore the anguish emanating from the wolf.
I walked away, my steps slowed with sorrow. I eventually had to stop and sit down. The light had begun to dim in the great forest. My eyes started to droop, my saddened heart making my tired. I curled in a shallow hole and fell asleep. “I will go home tomorrow…” I said as I succumbed to sleep.
